Dialectical Behavior Therapy with Multi-Problem Adolescents , May 5-6, 2008, Hilton Arlington, Washington, DC (Arlington). Taught by: Alec Miller, Psy.D. & Adam Payne, Ph.D. Up to12.5 CE Credits offered, depending on discipline. To register or to view a full list of Behavioral Tech Trainings visit www.behavioraltech.org or call 206.675.8588. Dialectical behavior therapy is an effective, evidence-based therapy designed to treat individuals with complex, chronic, difficult-to-treat disorders with a combination of Axis I and Axis II diagnoses.  Over the past decade, Miller, Rathus, and Linehan, have researched and adapted this treatment with adolescents and families, as described extensively in their recently published book, Dialectical Behavior Therapy with Suicidal Adolescents (2007).  Mental health professionals working with multi-problem suicidal adolescents are often stymied by the complex clinical presentations and treatment challenges that arise.  These adolescents are often difficult to engage and retain in outpatient treatment. DBT offers practitioners a comprehensive treatment approach that prioritizes life-threatening and therapy-interfering behaviors to keep adolescents safe, stable, and connected to treatment. This training is designed for all mental health practitioners working with teens and families in a wide range of treatment contexts.  Participants will learn the basic principles of DBT as well as relevant adaptations for working with this population.  Practitioners will learn specific principles and strategies relevant to individual therapy, family sessions, telephone consultation, and skills training with adolescents and families, including a new skills module called the walking the middle path.

JUNE, 2008:

Using Dialectical Behavior on the Front Lines: Adaptations of DBT for Clinical Support Staff in Mental Health Programs, June 5-6, 2008, Don Hall's Guesthouse & Conference Center, For Wayne, IN. Taught by: Michele Galietta, Ph.D. & Haleh Ghanizadeh,M.D. Up to12.5 CE Credits offered, depending on discipline.  To register or to view a full list of Behavioral Tech Trainings visit www.behavioraltech.org or call 206.675.8588. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an effective, evidence-based therapy designed to treat individuals with complex, chronic, difficult-to-treat disorders with a combination of Axis I and Axis II diagnosis.  Whether or not such individuals are participating in comprehensive DBT treatment, they are likely at times to have contact with clinical support staff in mental health programs: milieu staff on inpatient, forensic, partial hospital and day hospital units; front line workers of residential, outreach, and Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) programs; counselors in crisis and respite programs; and line staff of specialty programs for substance abuse and eating disorders. In fact, some clients will spend more time with these staff members than they do with their clinically licensed and trained DBT or non-DBT therapists.  Leaders of DBT programs have trained clinical support staff to apply the principles, strategies, and skills in their work with DBT clients so as to extend and reinforce the work of the individual therapist and skills training group.  Having a foundation in DBT principles and a wide array of concrete strategies to use with clients, these front line workers can maintain compassion, increase effectiveness, and reduce the likelihood of burnout. This training is designed for all clinical front-line support staff who treat this client population in a wide variety of treatment contexts.  Participants will learn the basic principles of DBT, and how to structure contact with clients around DBT assumptions, agreements, and targets.  The role of front line staff members in DBT programs will be clarified, especially the relationship with the DBT team and the individual therapist.  Special attention will be paid to those challenging situations that can result in burnout for staff members.  Use of DBT on the “front lines” has been reported to increase morale as well as effectiveness.
